The Resurrection

What happened next?

God demonstrated that He has sovereign authority over ALL of creation including the ability to conquer sin and the penalty of death. What good news! Jesus Christ had authority over death. His death was not an accident or the will of men. It was the will of God that Jesus be the sacrificial lamb. Jesus, before His death, referred to His upcoming death:

John 10:17-18 "For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. "No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father."

Jesus Himself willingly laid down His life for us, but also had authority from God the Father to take it up again. Jesus conquered death in His resurrection from the dead and demonstrated His sovereign authority over sin and death in the process. He prophesied over and over again before His death that He would rise again on the third day to His disciples, but they did not understand what He was saying. The gospels record the events. The gospel of Mark records:

Mark 16:2-6 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. They were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?" Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.

After the resurrection, Christ appeared in the flesh many times to His disciples over a period of 40 days to encourage them, to teach them, and to prepare them for the difficult times ahead. The good news is that Christ arose from the dead just as He said.

This message is highlighted in John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him."
